KAFD Conference Center, Riyadh, KSA

The KAFD Conference Centre is one of the most iconic and beautiful projects that Dunbar and Boardman has had the privilege to work on. The building resembles a gemstone with its faceted roof structure and façade consisting of mostly hexagonal shapes as well as vegetation. The challenge was to access the glass roof without touching the glass. Several options were discussed, and the decision was made to have abseilers walk on the roof to clean the façade glass. For the safety of the personnel, safety lines were introduced. The safety line layout was designed along the façade joints to camouflage the lines so they wouldn’t be too intrusive on the architectural design.

Another challenge was the access of the roof façade from inside the building. A cherry picker was accepted as the best solution. Following a comprehensive study and coordination with the architect, it was possible to move the cherry picker inside the entire structure to enable access.
