Project Overview

The Burj Al Arab is one of the world’s most iconic luxury hospitality developments and a globally recognised symbol of Dubai. Standing approximately 321 metres above a man-made island off Jumeirah Beach, the development is renowned for its distinctive sail-shaped architecture and world-class guest experience.

The hotel comprises 202 luxury duplex suites across 28 occupied levels and incorporates a sophisticated vertical transportation system designed to support guests, staff, operational services and premium hospitality functions.

Dunbar & Boardman was appointed as the independent Vertical Transportation Consultant and remained involved throughout key stages of the project from concept development through to commissioning and handover.

As one of the most prestigious hospitality developments ever constructed, the project required vertical transportation systems capable of delivering exceptional levels of performance, reliability and guest experience. Dunbar & Boardman was appointed during the concept stage of the project and assisted in developing the vertical transportation strategy and space planning requirements. Our involvement included:

  • Preparation of technical specifications
  • Contractor evaluation and tender support
  • Design reviews and technical coordination
  • Construction-phase consultancy support
  • Testing and commissioning reviews
The final installation comprised:
  • 18 Elevators
  • 2 Escalators
The lift strategy supported guest, service, and operational requirements throughout the development, including dedicated lifts serving premium hospitality functions and express lifts to key destination areas within the hotel.

The completed vertical transportation systems successfully supported the operational requirements of one of the world’s most recognised luxury hotels.
